Domestic scaffolding

Domestic Scaffolding Hire

Surrey & South London

What is domestic scaffolding and what does it cost?

Domestic scaffolding is access scaffolding designed for houses and residential properties — extensions, loft conversions, re-roofs, rendering, painting, guttering and chimney repairs. STR Scaffolding designs, erects and dismantles domestic scaffolds across Surrey and South London, offering scaffold hire and rental for as long as the build needs access. Most domestic jobs are quoted as a fixed price covering erect, hire and dismantle, with the hire period based on how long your builder needs access. Because price depends on the height, the number of elevations and the access on site, we give a firm quote after a free site visit or from photos. Our scaffolders are CISRS-trained, we work to NASC standards and we are insured to £10 million.

Most of our work is on homes — semi-detached and terraced houses, period properties, bungalows and new-build extensions. A domestic scaffold has to do more than just reach: it has to fit around bay windows, conservatories, narrow side returns, driveways and neighbours’ boundaries, while leaving your front door usable and your garden intact. We survey the property first, design the scaffold around how your builder will actually work, and put it up with as little disruption as possible.

Typical domestic jobs we scaffold

We work directly for homeowners as well as for builders, roofers, renderers and decorators. If you are a homeowner, you do not need to know anything about scaffolding — tell us what work is happening and we will design the right access for it, and speak to your builder directly if that is easier.

Domestic scaffolding FAQs

Price depends on the height, how many elevations you need, the access on site and how long you need it. A single-elevation scaffold to a two-storey house is a very different job to wrapping a whole detached property, so we do not publish a flat rate. We give a firm fixed price covering erect, hire and dismantle after a free site visit — or from photos for straightforward jobs.

The standard rental period covers the length of your build, and we agree it up front so there are no surprises. If your project overruns — which happens often with building work — just let us know and we will extend the hire at the agreed weekly rate rather than making you re-book.

If the scaffold sits entirely within your own property boundary, you do not need a licence. If it needs to stand on or oversail a public footpath or road, your local council must issue a highway licence. We handle those applications on your behalf and factor the timing into your start date.

We use sole boards and base plates to spread the load and protect block paving, tarmac and lawns, and we plan around drain runs, manhole covers and inspection chambers during the survey. We are also fully insured to £10 million, so you are covered either way.

Yes. This is one of the most common requests on domestic extensions. We bridge over conservatories and flat roofs so no load is placed on the glazing or the roof covering, using beams and additional standards designed for the span.

For most domestic jobs across Surrey and South London we can be on site within a few days of you giving us the go-ahead, and sooner for urgent repairs or emergency work. Erecting a typical house scaffold usually takes a few hours to a day.
