What scaffolding do you need to install solar panels?

A solar PV installation needs a scaffold with a boarded working platform at gutter height running the length of the array, edge protection to every open edge, and a safe route to get panels up to the roof. STR Scaffolding provides solar scaffolding across Surrey and South London for MCS-registered installers and directly for homeowners having panels fitted. We work to installer schedules — up before the install crew arrives, down promptly once the array is commissioned — because solar installs are typically one or two days and a scaffold sitting idle costs everybody money. Our scaffolders are CISRS-trained, we work to NASC standards and we are insured to £10 million.

Solar work has a rhythm of its own. The install is fast, the crew is booked weeks ahead, and the panels are awkward, heavy and fragile. The scaffold has to be ready the day before, give the installers a platform they can work along the whole array from, and provide a safe way to lift panels to roof level without walking them up a ladder. Then it needs to come down quickly so the hire is not eating into the customer’s payback.

Working with solar installers

Most of our solar work is subcontracted from PV installers who need a scaffolder that understands their programme. We take the booking against your install date, deal with the homeowner directly on access and parking if you want us to, and keep the hire period tight. If an install slips — weather, DNO paperwork, a delayed delivery — we move the dates rather than charging you for a scaffold sitting on a roof doing nothing.

Yes, in nearly all cases. Reputable MCS-registered installers will not fit panels off a ladder — the Work at Height Regulations require proper access and edge protection, and the panels themselves are too heavy and awkward to handle safely otherwise. Most installers will either arrange scaffolding or ask you to.

It depends on the height of the property, the length of the array and how many elevations need access, but because solar installs are short the hire period is usually just a few days — which keeps the cost well below a typical building project scaffold. We quote a fixed price covering erect, hire and dismantle.

Most domestic solar installs take one to two days, so the scaffold is typically up for under a week including erect and strike. We book the dates around your installer’s schedule and take it down as soon as the array is commissioned and signed off.

That is how we prefer to work. Give us the install date and we will have the scaffold up and handed over beforehand. If the install moves — weather, DNO approval, delivery delays — tell us and we will shift the dates rather than leaving you paying for idle hire.

Yes. Flat roof arrays usually need perimeter edge protection and a safe access route rather than a full elevation scaffold, and commercial rooftop installs often need loading access for larger volumes of panels. We design to whichever the site needs.

Yes. We do short-hire access for panel replacement, optimiser and inverter faults, cleaning and bird-proofing, as well as removing and refitting panels when a roof is being re-covered underneath them.
